Welcome to The Black Horse
&
Four Hundred Years Of History
Situated on the High Street in the picturesque village of Standlake, the premises which originally comprised of three cottages and the surrounding land, were part of The Standlake Manor Estate which had been given to Anne of Cleeves by Henry VIII. After her death they were sold and in 1597 were acquired by Lincoln College. Two fell down and in 1673 the third was transformed into the present building. A fire place and an outer wall still bear this date. The property came into the tenancy of City Brewery, Oxford in c1888. Halls Brewery took over the tenancy of the property in c1900 and bought the public house from Lincoln College in 1918. Halls and the Black Horse were absorbed by Ind Coope c1958. The name Black Horse does not appear in the title deeds until 1851. The first reference to the name Black Horse can be found in the Rules of The Standlake Friendly Society founded in 1751.The Black Horse was the meeting place for the local branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters. They were the first people to use the new club room in 1900.
The Black Horse Today
Today The Black Horse is no longer just an ale house, we do of course still offer traditional hand pulled ales, complimented by a range of modern beers, and fine wines. We also offer the weary traveller, the holiday maker and the local residents a selection of fine foods.
